Binnu Dhillon Tells Why His Feet Looked Fairer Than His Hands In ‘Kala Shah Kala’ Still

Written and directed by Amarjit Singh, Kala Shah Kala is the film that’s being awaited keenly for! From the iconic starcast to a wonderful concept, the film has so much to look forward to!

Written and directed by Amarjit Singh, Kala Shah Kala is the film that’s being awaited keenly for! From the iconic starcast to a wonderful concept, the film has so much to look forward to!

Binnu Dhillon, who’s playing a dusky complexioned guy in Kala Shah Kala, posted a still of his from the movie a few days ago on his social media. While he looked almost unrecognizable in the deep dark skin tone, one look at his feet left us wondering! His hands and face were all dark, but the feet apparently were left with any amount of makeup.

Before jumping on to conclusions, we decided to ask the actor directly and he laughed to say, “During Kala Shah Kala, it took me more than an hour to get ready for a single shot. The makeup took so much time. So, in some scenes where my full profile was not required, I used to ask the makeup team to only cover my face and hands with makeup, to save the time. I shared one such still from the shoot, with my followers on social media but let me tell you, that scene in the film won’t show my feet. It’s only my upper body which you’ll see in the movie.”

See the said Still From Kala Shah Kala

Well, Binnu ji thanks for clarifying that point. We can’t obviously wait to see the scene in the movie itself on 14th Feb.

Kala Shah Kala, which is releasing on 14th February – (this Valentine’s Day) has been bankrolled by Harsimran Dhillon, GS Dhillon, Navaniat Singh, Achal Kaushal, Karan Soni and Binnu Dhillon, with Lakhwinder Singh, and Ashish Saini as the co-producers. Besides Binnu Dhillon, Sargun Mehta and Jordan Sandhu in the lead, the movie stars Karamjit Anmol, Harby Sangha, Nirmal Rishi, BN Sharma, Gurmeet Saajan, Anita Devgan, and Shahnaz Gill in pivotal roles.

UDA AIDA Review: The Makers Deserve A Standing Ovation For This One!

UDA AIDA: A cinematic tour-de-force

I’ve been a fan of Ksshitij Chaudhary and Naresh Kathooria – the famous director-writer duo of Punjabi cinema since Jatts in Golmaal (2013) days. Together these two makers have given us superhit comic films like Mr and Mrs 420 series and Vekh Barataan Challiyaan and had established themselves as two of the best creative personalities of Punjabi cinema that specialize in giving laughter riots.

However, after watching UDA AIDA, my opinion about them has drastically changed! The ones I perceived as being the experts in churning out comic capers one after another, have taken the whole industry by storm by delivering a film that’s likely to be remembered as one of the best films ever made in the history of Punjabi cinema. A masterpiece, a timeless classic, UDA AIDA shall be remembered forever!

A film based on the gradual extinction of Punjabi language from schools and the humiliation one has to go through if one doesn’t know “English” despite their otherwise meritorious distinctions, UDA AIDA showcases the reality of today’s Punjabi generation, their parents and society as a whole. The best part is that it is written in such a mature manner that nowhere does one feel that the film is exaggerating the reality in any way. Nowhere do you feel that the film is unnecessarily trying to assert the importance of Punjabi, or emotionally blackmailing you to feel guilty. The director has handled the subject judiciously, and has nowhere taken any kind of meaningless creative liberties to emphasize his vision. Only a director of the caliber of Ksshitij Chaudhary can accomplish such feat so brilliantly, supported so well by Naresh Kathooria – the writer and one of the producers as well.

Without talking much about the plot, UDA AIDA is a film which doesn’t have your typical ‘hero or heroine’. It is a story of one family and hats off to actors like Neeru Bajwa and Tarsem Jassar for playing the role of parents of about a 10-year-old kid with such elan! The helplessness seen on Neeru and Tarsem’s faces, their faces filled with humiliation when confronted by unforgiving school authorities, the dream in their eyes for their only child, the exhilaration that they experience when their child gets admitted to the school of the mother’s choice after all the struggles – all speak volumes about the massive talent that these two possess. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Neeru displayed a performance of a lifetime with UDA AIDA and she also gave a tight slap to those who make fun of her accented dialogues. Perhaps, one needs a director like Chaudhary to extract such brilliance from their actors.

After Neeru and Tarsem’s chemistry, another one worth mentioning is the one shared between B.N. Sharma and Gurpreet Ghuggi. They make you laugh with their close-to-reality dialogues, nothing slapstick and loud, only situational! I am sure the duo would’ve loved to do something different in this film.

Special mention to all the kids – especially the lead ‘Aman’ (Ansh), who one can’t stop applauding for when he experiences sadness and guilt. Equal praise for the kid who plays his cousin back in village!

Anything worth improving?

I didn’t quite like Poppy Jabbal’s character. While other school staff wore school uniform, she looked as if she had come to a fashion parade – seen wearing minis and jumpsuits mostly, and speaking in English even to villagers, who she knows well are not able to understand her.

Finally, a standing ovation to the producers – Rrupaali Gupta of Friday Russh Motion Pictures, (includes Naresh Kathooria and Ksshitij Chaudhary too) for attempting such a meaningful subject in such a terrific way onscreen. This film is a must-watch for being a family entertainer in actual sense of the word with its ‘content being its king’. Sure-shot blockbuster, UDA AIDA is a film that you can’t afford to miss at any cost.

Rating: 4.5/5

UDA AIDA: Neeru Bajwa Is Appalled By The Prejudice Against Punjabi Films

Neeru Bajwa who is awaiting the release of her first Punjabi film of 2019 – UDA AIDA (Releasing on 1st Feb), is doing everything possible to make her fans aware about the significance of the film. From playing “Punjabi language tests” in interviews to talking about her own life story, her daughter’s Punjabi speaking abilities to speaking about the prejudice that she, despite being a highly successful Punjabi actress, has faced, she revealed it all during her candid promotional interviews.

Talking to Iampunjaabi.com, Neeru Bajwa said, “I do not understand the psyche of our own people when it comes to our mother-tongue. Why do we feel ashamed talking in our own language. I feel fortunate that even though I have been born and brought up in Canada, my parents made sure that I speak only Punjabi at home. That’s the same I am doing with my three year old daughter now. Both me and my husband have made it a point that she listens to Punjabi music – especially the legends like Gurdas Mann, speaks in Punjabi at home and even during my India visits, I try to keep a Punjabi tutor for her while I am away on shoots. I guess, parenting plays a big role here.”

Speaking about the prejudice that she herself faced for working in Punjabi cinema, Neeru recalls, “I was so appalled once when some Punjabis came to me and said ‘we don’t watch Punjabi movies at all, but yeah we’ve watched your ‘Jatt and Juliet’. For me, it was like ‘are they complimenting me or insulting my choice of working in Punjabi films?”

“It’s sad to see such a treatment against our mother-tongue. Learning international languages isn’t bad. In fact, it’s good for your career but insulting your mother-tongue and feeling humiliated by speaking it, is a phenomenon that completely baffles me,” she adds.

Check out some of Neeru Bajwa’s ‘Countdown’ posts here. Looks she’s really excited about the movie. Isn’t it?

UDA AIDA releases TOMORROW i.e. 1st FEB 2019. It is directed by Ksshitij Chaudhary, written by Naresh Kathooria and produced by Rrupaali Gupta of Friday Russh Motion Pictures along with Naresh Kathooria Films and Ksshitij Chaudhary Films.
