Oscar-Bafta winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley, who had connected with India already with his iconic role as ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ in Hollywood film, ‘Gandhi’ in Sir Richard Attenborough’s 1982 biopic, is one actor who has also played the the lead role as a Sikh man in film directed by Isabel Coixet.

Kingsley played a Sikh cabbie from New York in the movie titled ‘Learning to Drive’ which released in June 2014.  Ben Kingsley looked almost unrecognisable in a blue turban in this one!
”I say this with huge respect to my Sikh friends, and I have two or three, but if you know one Sikh chap you know them all. Almost military, because they are a warrior group, the Sikhs.”
His character called Darwan Singh Tur spends much of his time teaching a divorcee Wendy, played by Patricia Clarkson, to drive in Queens. Talking about his character, ahead of its release, Kingsley was quoted as saying, “He’s not embittered at all. He’s very generous and open and compassionate. I say this with huge respect to my Sikh friends, and I have two or three, but if you know one Sikh chap you know them all. Because there is something wonderfully consistent about their approach to life. Of course they differentiate, but there is something about Sikhism that is their backbone. That’s what I enjoyed playing – that backbone, that spine. Almost military, because they are a warrior group, the Sikhs.”

Here are some excerpts from his Interview to The Globe And Mail Ahead Of The Release of ‘Learning To Drive’

And what about your character, a Sikh driving instructor and taxi driver in New York?

Life in art, you know? A guy from the Punjab, who is a university professor, but cannot get academia work in the United States. So he teaches people – teaches people to drive. Still the professor. The gentle, loving, life-affirming professor behind the wheel. All that was enhanced by me, an actor from England, in complete disguise, working in the extraordinary environment of New York. There’s a kind of link there between him and me. We’re both discovering at the same time.

His nobleness, after going through such things: Could Westerners learn something from him?

He’s not embittered at all. Almost military, because they are a warrior group, the Sikhs. I’m so fond of my character, and I am his custodian. I hope that I honour that responsibility through playing him as honestly as I could.

3 Best Things About UDA AIDA’s Trailer

Uda Aida’s trailer was long waited for! Featuring Neeru Bajwa and Tarsem Jassar for the first time together, the film boasts of several popular faces of Punjabi cinema like Gurpreet Ghuggi, B.N. Sharma and many more.

Uda Aida’s trailer was long waited for! Featuring Neeru Bajwa and Tarsem Jassar for the first time together, the film boasts of several popular faces of Punjabi cinema like Gurpreet Ghuggi, B.N. Sharma and many more.

Here are the three best things we liked about Uda Aida’s Trailer (Watch the Trailer Below)

1. Chemistry between Neeru Bajwa and Tarsem Jassar: As evident from the trailer, Neeru and Tarsem are playing husband-wife in the film – which is in itself, an amazing part! Both are looking apt as desi couple who’s got a lovely boy as their child. The cute duo is trying its best to get their child admitted to a good school (good for them means, an English medium convent school) and their little ‘nonk jhonk’ about achieving this goal is something that makes us anxiously wait for the movie release.

2. The Concept: Just when almost every filmmaker is hell bent on making a wedding-based film with similar characters played by the same actors, the team of Naresh Kathooria, Ksshitij Chaudhary and Rrupaali Gupta thought about weaving magic on silver screen through a concept that’s sure to touch the emotional chords of every Punjabi parent and make them think about the choices they’re making for their kids these days, without of course, compromising on the entertainment quotient of the film! ‘Uda Aida’s’ trailer starts with a bang, making us wonder and laugh at the same time and finally, forcing us to ponder!

3. The Look ‘n’ Feel: The entire look and feel of the film, as guessed through its trailer, is vibrant and heartwarming. The sight of endearing school kids, the teachers, the mix of Hindi, English and Punjabi, gives us a feeling that the film is based on the present-day reality of urban Punjab, that the kids and their parents are going to enjoy equally together. Away from usual family dramas, love triangles and weddings, Uda Aida seems to be a film of an entirely different world that the Punjabi cinema has never touched before.

Kudos to the team of Friday Russh Motion Pictures, Naresh Kathooria Films and Ksshitij Chaudhary Films. Directed by Ksshitij and written by Kathooria himself, Uda Aida releases on 1st February. Stay tuned to Iampunjaabi.com for latest updates of Uda Aida.

With 2018 being the year of innovative cinema, 2019 is ready to welcome us with even fresher subjects and awesome pairings. One of the most awaited films of the first quarter of 2019 is certainly, Tarsem Jassar and Neeru Bajwa starrer ‘UDA AIDA’ which is all set to release on 1st Feb.

It’s first official poster was revealed today and boasts of a strong message within a vibrant theme. With both Tarsem and Neeru sitting together with a cute child in school uniform in the middle, the film seems to be based on the subject of ‘education’. In the poster, Tarsem and Neeru are carrying the placards of Punjabi and English alphabets respectively, while the child is joyfully standing behind the backdrop of a blackboard with ‘Angrezi Sikho written in gurmukhi.’

Looking at the poster, it seems a lot of thought has gone into delivering the concept that it’s based on. Seemingly, it enforces the importance of teaching Punjabi  in today’s schools, which emphasize on learning English and foreign languages mostly.

Uda Aida Releases on 1st February 2019.

More details shall be found out soon!
