Meet Gursoch Kaur, who has defied traditions boldly, in complete respect of her religion, and become the first ever female Sikh Officer to join New York Police, who wears a turban!
There are currently about 190 Sikh police officers in NYPD, 10 of whom are women. But since turbans were first allowed to be worn by recruits in December 2016, Kaur is the first woman to do so.
In an interview she said, ‘I feel blessed. People haven’t seen anything like that. It’s great because it gives me an opportunity to tell them what’s behind the turban, educate them. That’s how we love one another.”
Kaur, 20 is from Queens, New York and said that she hopes her presence on the force can bring visibility to the Sikh community and will help locals learn more about her culture.
