UDA AIDA: Neeru Bajwa Is Appalled By The Prejudice Against Punjabi Films

by Monita Sharma

Neeru Bajwa who is awaiting the release of her first Punjabi film of 2019 – UDA AIDA (Releasing on 1st Feb), is doing everything possible to make her fans aware about the significance of the film. From playing “Punjabi language tests” in interviews to talking about her own life story, her daughter’s Punjabi speaking abilities to speaking about the prejudice that she, despite being a highly successful Punjabi actress, has faced, she revealed it all during her candid promotional interviews.

Talking to Iampunjaabi.com, Neeru Bajwa said, “I do not understand the psyche of our own people when it comes to our mother-tongue. Why do we feel ashamed talking in our own language. I feel fortunate that even though I have been born and brought up in Canada, my parents made sure that I speak only Punjabi at home. That’s the same I am doing with my three year old daughter now. Both me and my husband have made it a point that she listens to Punjabi music – especially the legends like Gurdas Mann, speaks in Punjabi at home and even during my India visits, I try to keep a Punjabi tutor for her while I am away on shoots. I guess, parenting plays a big role here.”

Speaking about the prejudice that she herself faced for working in Punjabi cinema, Neeru recalls, “I was so appalled once when some Punjabis came to me and said ‘we don’t watch Punjabi movies at all, but yeah we’ve watched your ‘Jatt and Juliet’. For me, it was like ‘are they complimenting me or insulting my choice of working in Punjabi films?”

“It’s sad to see such a treatment against our mother-tongue. Learning international languages isn’t bad. In fact, it’s good for your career but insulting your mother-tongue and feeling humiliated by speaking it, is a phenomenon that completely baffles me,” she adds.
