“It’s your good work that fetches you more work! A film becoming a hit or a flop doesn’t matter in the long run.” Diligently following this philosophy, singer/actor Ranjit Bawa has been getting interesting roles one after the other, the latest being that of an ‘amli’ in Mr and Mrs 420 Returns, a Punjabi film releasing this Independence Day. (15th August)
Talking about his film, Bawa said in an interview to Iampunjaabi.com that he is happy that his previous characters have been so loved by the audiences allover the world that the fate of any film at the box-office, doesn’t matter to him anymore. When asked about how he acquired such resilience, the spirited actor says, “I was so very excited and nervous about my first film – Toofan Singh – which got embroiled in controversies and got delayed for two years. That experience eventually matured me as a person and now I take everything as my job that I have to do with utmost sincerity, leaving the result to the Almighty.”

Drifting away from this serious conversation, we asked Bawa to talk about his role in Mr and Mrs 420 Returns which shows him in an avatar, completely different from his real life. “When I read the script of Mr and Mrs 420 Returns, I was taken aback for a while since I couldn’t believe then that I could do the role of somebody addicted to drugs, or what we call in Punjab – ‘Amli’,” he laughs.
He explains the real reason behind his apprehension – “I’ve been a vegetarian and a teetotaller all my life and getting into this character seemed a bit tough to me initially, but then I thought of taking it as another challenge. I am glad that I could accompish it and now I’ve to see whether I meet the expectations of the audience or not.”

A big fan of the original (Mr and Mrs 420 released in 2014), Ranjit Bawa feels that he’s extremely fortunate to have got a chance to work in its sequel. “In the previous verison, Binnu Bhaji was my favorite. In this one, I loved Ghuggi ji especially but the most hilarious ones have obviously been Jassie and Karamjit Bhaji who play the women.”
Shedding some light onto his character he says, “Although my character (Laddi) is Amli yet he falls in love with a girl (Payal Rajput). No one gives him any money as he’s always going to waste it on drugs. However, circumstances lead him to marry Radha (Jassie Gill), something that I cannot still stop laughing about. In fact, the scene when I had to put ‘Varmala’ in Jassie’s neck was the most uncomfortable one for me, as none of us was able to keep our laughter at bay.”
Finally, Bawa thanked his producer, Rrupaali Gupta, for providing a great atmosphere for the whole team. We wish him great luck for Mr and Mrs 420 Returns (releasing on 15th August.) The movie also stars industry’s best of the best like Gurpreet Ghuggi, Jaswinder Bhalla, Karamjit Anmol and BN Sharma. The female starcast inludes Payal Rajput and Avantika Hundal. Mr and Mrs 420 Returns is directed by Ksshitij Chaudhary, written by Naresh Kathooria and produced by Friday Russh Motion Pictures (Rrupaali Gupta, who also plays the role of Gurpreet Ghuggi’s wife in the film).
