While it is not uncommon to see singers turning into actors and producers in Punjabi cinema, ‘directors turning into producers’ is a relatively new phenomenon happening now. Just a month back it was reported that Pankaj Batra, the director behind films like Sajjan Singh Rangroot, Bambukat, Goreyan Nu Dafa Karo, has donned the producer’s hat, now it’s Simerjit Singh’s turn to explore the domain of a film producer!
Simerjit Singh, who is currently directly Gippy Grewal’s ‘Mar Gaye Oye Loko’ and is the man behind films like Angrej, Subedar Joginder Singh has just announced his debut film has a producer called ‘Television’.
He made this announcement on his social media profiles, sharing a poster of the film. The first-look gives an impression of a period film with the logo of Doordarshan displayed on the rustic poster. Perhaps, the film portrays the journey of the idiot-box in India and its influence on the masses.
As far as casting is concerned, singer-turned-actor Kulwinder Billa is going to play the male lead. Kulwinder Billa made his debut in Simerjeet’s directorial venture this year (Subedar Joginder Singh). Billa has also signed a film called Parahuna, releasing on 5th October this year.
Update on 6th Sep 2018: Mandy Takhar has now been finalised to play the female lead in ‘Television’. According to Kulwinder Billa, “‘Television’ is a period drama. It revolves around the era when television was first introduced, thus, it captures the euphoria of the people.”
